Working memory correlates of second language learning: the effect of language experience, language proficiency, and culture

We compare the performance of Chinese learners of English and English learners of Chinese in verbal and visual working memory tasks and an attention task, and investigate the effect of language experience, proficiency in the second language, and culture.

I'm a professor of linguistics at the University of Leeds, UK.
My research explores the following themes:
- Understanding individual differences in language acquisition and language maintenance (due to the interaction of linguistic, experiential, and cognitive factors)
- Quantifying bilingualism (see Q-BEx)
- Assessing language outcomes in children and adolescents (especially pragmatic competence)
- Evaluating language complexity and tracking its acquisition
- Identifying cross-linguistic influences in advanced L2 speakers
- Exploring the interplay between syntax and pragmatics (including both information structure and discourse competence)
- Dabbling in experimental syntax.
I have a keen interest in statistical modelling and data visualisation using R. I'm always interested in developing partnerships with teachers to enhance research-informed approaches to education.
